Schumer: "We're Not Going To Take Away Your Gun If You're A Law-Abiding Citizen"
SEN. CHUCK SCHUMER (D-NY): "The NRA, you know, used to be, when I was in summer camp, I took NRA sharpshooter lessons. I have a few merit badges. And it used to be like the AAA, you know, it was helpful with safety and insurance. How did it change? Two ways. One, in the 1980s, there was a big fight within the NRA and more militant people took over. And they started stoking the paranoia. But, because crime was so high in areas like mine, lots of progressives said, 'Hey, let's ban handguns. Let's get raid of all guns.' And that fed on the paranoia. So we should come back and say we're not going to take away your gun if you're a law-abiding citizen. The second amendment is as important as the first but you have to admit that no amendment is absolute like the NRA's position is today."
